missionary 52, -7.commonage, kilkenny, ireland, 2010.
Outdoor commission for Commonage, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland.
Missionary 52, -7 was created for Commonage, an exhibtion and series of events exploring community in contemporary rural Ireland. Commonage was curated by Culturstruction (Jo Anne Butler, Tara Kennedy) and Rosie Lynch.
Missionary 52, -7 was sited on the top of an ancient Norman Moat and Bailey in Callan town, Co. Kilkenny. The architectural structure took much of its influence from contemporary peace keeping missions and used high powered lights and video projection. At night it lit the moat and surrounding space with an almost blinding intensity while an internal projection displayed images of high divers from all around the world in mid dive. In the day time it kept its position. The work took its influence from the connections between the recent bypass road built around Callan, the Camphill community and the History of the Moat itself.
9 x 5.5 x 3.3 metres approx.
Timber, metal, projector, diesel generators, industrial lights.
